Kashmir shrine for ‘dead’ to open after twenty years

SRINAGAR, July 26: A historical Hindu shrine dedicated to dead children will reopen after more than twenty years in Kashmir where thousands of minority Pandits fled after an armed conflict started in 1989.

Kapal Mochan shrine in Digam village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district will be reopened with a special puja or worship marking ‘Shravan Shuklapaksh Dashmi’.

Kashmir valley holds a significant place among Hindus of the country for its shrines including the Amarnath cave shrine  which attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year.

Till two decades ago, rituals connected to deaths of unmarried children were performed at the shrine. Now ancient rituals like ‘Abhishek’ and ‘Shudikaran’ of Kapilashwar lingam will be performed again from Friday.

“Ancient rituals, including a ‘maha yagh’, will be performed to observe Shravan Shuklapaksh Dashmi tomorrow,” Rohit Lahori, senior Member of Kapal Mochan shrine organising Committee, said.
