SRINAGAR, June 23: Three people have been injured by a wild porcupine in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
“A wild porcupine appeared in main Chowk Utrsoo, Anantnag and injured three persons there,” a police spokesperson said.
The animal was later caught by policemen and was handed to the local wildlife department.
Porcupine, called Tronz locally, are small animals with spikes which they use to defend themselves when attacked.
Although, officials say, an increase in wildlife population is good news for Kashmir’s sanctuaries and wildlife parks, which are among the various places frequented by tourist in the state, yet growing instances of man-animal conflict is worrying them.
“Due to a growing trend of deforestation in Kashmir, these animals are losing their habitats. So they have no option but to come down to inhabited areas for food,” a wildlife official says.
