SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to ban re-employment of officials supposed to retire from full-time government work.
At a meeting in winter capital Jammu this morning, the cabinet directed the General Administration Department not to entertain any such proposal and to direct the line Departments to submit none, an official spokesman said.
Jammu and Kashmir is grappling with unemployment, but the government recently said that 149 people were re-employed in government departments, corporations and autonomous bodies on different criterion during the past four years.
“43 persons have been re-employed as consultants, advisers, chairmen and members during the past two years,” Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather told the Legislative Council.
Rather admitted that the grant of extension or re-employment to retired government servants blocked the growth of in-service officers, besides affecting employment opportunities.
“Re-employment of government employees is not encouraged,” he said, but added that the government considers such appointments only when there is no alternative.
“It has been directed that re-employments or extensions should ordinarily be avoided and resorted to in rarest of rare cases, that too when the same is inevitable in public interest,” he insisted.
