SRINAGAR: At least one youth has been critically wounded after police and paramilitaries fired their pellet guns at stone throwing protesters in Kashmir, sources say.
Sohail Majeed Khan, 19, has received pellets all over the body. He is battling for life at the Medical Institute in Srinagar.
Khan was wounded at Bohri Kadal area of old Srinagar city where angry youth threw stones at police and paramilitaries who in turn used force to disperse them.
Similar clashes were are also reported from nearby Rajouri Kadal area.
A general strike was observed today (Tuesday) to commemorate the assassination of two separatist leaders by unidentified gunmen.
Separatist leader and chief cleric of the valley, Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his Nigeen residence on this day in 1990.
Later, security forces also opened fire on mourners bearing the slain leader’s body, killing dozens of people.
During a rally to mark Farooq’s 12th death anniversary in 2002, another senior separatist leader, Abdul Gani Lone was killed. Both of them are buried in the Martyr’s Cemetery at Eidgah in old quarters of the city.
