Spurious Drugs Scam: Soz Steps In

SRINAGAR: The J-K Congress chief, Saifuddin Soz has asked the incumbent health minister to make public facts of the spurious drugs scandal.

“I have asked him to explain his stand on the issue before people of the state especially civil society members,” Saifuddin Soz told a local news agency.

Jammu and Kashmir is governed by the National Conference party in coalition with the Congress.

Soz’s intervention comes as the spurious drugs, supplied to various hospitals of the valley, were purchased during the tenure of former Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma, who belongs to the Congress.

Many, particularly the separatists and an organisation of doctors in the valley, have asked Sharma to own responsibility for the scandal and resign.

Sharma has denied involvement in the scam and said those asking him to resign were being misled by people with “vested interests”, hinting at another Congress leader, Taj Mohidin, who is also minister in-charge of the affected hospitals.

Mohidin has refuted the charges.

Observers say the recently-appointed state Congress chief’s success in settling the issue will be keenly watched.

Soz told the news agency that the current Health Minister, Shabir Ahmed Khan had assured him of bringing all the details related to the issue into public domain.
