SRINAGAR: To maintain law and order, authorities imposed restrictions in Palhalan, Pattan in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, where the situation was tense after arrest of a local youth, who is also the Imam of a local mosque.
Official sources said authorities imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC in Palhalan and adjoining areas since early this morning following clashes last night after arrest of Nazir Ahmad Tantray by police and security forces.
It was a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, they said.
Describing the arrest of Tantray an attempt to disturb peace in the area, the residents alleged that there was no stone pelting or any other demonstration in the recent past in the area.
“The arrest was nothing but to force people to take to streets,” the residents alleged and demanded his immediate release.
Yesterday, traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla road was disrupted for several hours after the demonstrators blocked the traffic, demanding release of Tantray.
A number of people, including security personnel, were injured in the clashes
