SRINAGAR: A policeman has been thrown out of service while three others placed under suspension a day after they raided a house over a land dispute and arrested six of a family including two females.
The incident in Laro village of Kulgam district in southern Kashmir had led to protests which continued Monday, with protesters alleging that the females were taken away by male cops and not women police.
Kashmir is a Muslim-dominated region and still maintains a conservative approach towards women.
The district head has also ordered probe into the arrests, which police said were made after their relative lodged an FIR against them over a family dispute.
The family was let off soon after, police said. But protesters alleged that the police also beat up the family members before taking them to a nearby camp.
“Acting on the direction of Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Mir, District Superintendent of Police today placed 3 police officials under suspension …in a raid carried out during the intervening night of 19 and 20 January at Laro village…An SPO has also been disengaged in this connection,” an official spokesperson said today.
“He also ordered the Addl. District Development Commissioner, M.Y. Zargar, to furnish a factual report within a fortnight.”
A Station House Officer has also been attached for the incident, the spokesperson added.
