SRINAGAR: The Indian army says Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire again by firing at their positions from across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
The heavily militarised line divides the region between the two countries that have fought two of their three wars over it.
A spokesman of the army has told the Press Trust of India that Pakistani troops fired bullets and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) at their post in Nawgam sector.
“The Indian Army exercised total restraint and did not retaliate to the unprovoked firing from the other side,” he told the PTI.
The spokesman says vigil along the LoC has been increased as the ceasefire violations could be a diversionary tactic to push militants into the Valley from Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
There has so far been no word from the Pakistani military.
This is the third incident of firing in a week between Indian and Pakistan troops at the LoC.
Last Friday, a Brigadier and two soldiers were left wounded.
There is a long history border skirmishes in Kashmir, but they have been far less frequent in recent years. A ceasefire has been in effect along the de facto border since November 2003.
The two south Asian rivals were engaged in a major stand-off in January this year that threatened diplomatic ties.
