Kashmir working on ‘mass cloning’ of Pashmina goat

SRINAGAR: After the first successful clone of a Pashmina goat was developed in Kashmir, scientists are now working on a project for its mass production.

“The team that made the successful cloning of ‘Noori’ possible is now working on the mass cloning of the goat,” Vice Chancellor of Sheri Kashmir Agricultural University (SKUAST), Dr. Tej Pratap Singh told a meeting of scientists.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who met ‘Noori’ and felicitated its creators at his office.

Although Pashmina goats are not rare “their mass cloning would lead to an increased in the production of good quality pashmina wool,” Singh said.

While speaking at the event, the Chief Minister also asked scientists to work on the cloning of other endangered animals of the state like the Hangul and Chiru.

“Government wants to own and support projects of SKUAST aimed at application of technology to upgrade and increase the quality production of animals,” he said.
