SRINAGAR, Aug 10: A Kashmiri youth has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old daughter of an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer in Mumbai, the Maharashtra state police say.
Sajad Ahmed Mughal, 22, was arrested late on Thursday at the Mumbai central railway station while he was trying to flee, they say.
Mughal hails from Baramulla district of Kashmir and was working as a security guard since 2009 at the Wadala apartment in which the slain lady Pallavi Purkayastha lived.
Purkayastha was found dead in the living room of her apartment by her boyfriend on Thursday morning.
“During the investigations the man has admitted to having committed the murder with a knife,” Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner, Mumbai Crime Branch told a press conference in Mumbai.
Different versions have been pouring in about why Mughal murdered the lady. One says that Purkayastha had reportedly resisted Mughal’s overtures but fell prey to his act of his revenge. Another says that Mughal had developed a liking for the girl and was looking for the moment when she would be alone at her home.
However, the officer said that investigations revealed that Mughal, with no apparent criminal records, had meticulously planned the murder.
“What we found out was that he tripped off the lights and knew that Pallavi would call an electrician. He accompanied the elctrician and somehow managed to get the key. Then afterwards he went into the flat and a fight ensued after which he slit her to death,” commissioner Roy said.
