Paramilitary Soldier Shot Dead in Kashmir Capital

SRINAGAR: Suspected militants have shot dead one paramilitary soldier and wounded another in the Kashmir capital Srinagar.

Police say the soldiers of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were shopping near Iqbal Park when militants fired at them, apparently with silencer-fitted pistols.

The attackers fled the scene soon after.

The deceased was identified as Head Constable D Naik, a resident of Orissa state, while the injured soldier is Constable Mukesh Kumar, from Uttar Pradesh.

The paramilitaries have cordoned off the area and launched a search.

No militant group has so far claimed responsibility.

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an armed conflict for more than two decades. Violence has declined significantly in the past ten years.

However reports with the police suggest that militants have been finding fresh recruits who are being trained locally, instead of being sent to Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
