KARGIL: Kargil, the Muslim-majority district of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region, is observing a shutdown Saturday to protest the killings of Muslims by the Border Security Force in Ramban area.
Shops, business establishments, government offices and schools are closed over a call by the Anjuman Jamiyat Ullama (the Islamic Society) of Kargil.
On Thursday BSF soldiers fired at thousands of Muslims protesting sacrilege of the holy Quran in Gool village, 334 km from here.
Six persons were reported dead while more than 40 were wounded. The authorities have confirmed only 4 deaths.
The protests happened after BSF soldiers stormed into an Islamic seminary late on Wednesday night where they beat up a cleric and tore pages of the Quran.
Most of the areas in the Muslim-majority Jammu and kashmir are seething with anger over the incident.
In Kargil, Sheikh Hussain Muqadas termed the incident as an act of cowardice. “Such incidents are a blow to the democratic structure of India and to secure the secular image government should immediately take action against the culprits,” he said.
Sheikh Asgar Zakiri, Member Ullama Council of the Islamic Society condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran and requested the government to take immediate action keeping in view the sentiments of the Muslim community in general and humanity in particular.
