SRINAGAR, Aug 17: A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier has been killed in firing in RS Pura sector of Jammu and Kashmir along the border between India and Pakistan, officials say.
The firing between Pakistani rangers and the Border Security Force (BSF) which had stopped for the night, started again this morning after the rangers fired at the ambush points of the BSF, the NDTV reported.
There were 8 such incidents of firing in past 10 days.
India says it has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over what they say were ceasefire violations at the border.
Pakistan troops fired, they said, on Indian posts in Krishagati belt of Poonch sector around Wednesday night as India celebrated its Independence day and continued intermittently till Thursday morning.
Pakistan Rangers also targeted Indian forward post along the Indo-Pak border in Pansar Border Out Post (BOP) of Samba sector on late Wednesday afternoon.
The two firing incidents and ceasefire violations by Pakistan came barely hours after greeting and presenting sweets to the BSF troops and Army on India’s 66 Independence day by them on IB and LoC on Wednesday.
So far, there have been 31 ceasefire violations this year followed by 51 cases in 2011, 44 cases of ceasefire violations along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir were registered in 2010 and 28 were in 2009.
The recent firings and ceasefire violations by Pakistan came close on the heels of detection of 400-meter long tunnel in Samba sector on July 28.
“All activities across LoC are continuously monitored. Measures like strengthening of defences, deployment and redeployment of troops, infrastructure development and military modernisation are factored into our plans,” officials have said.
India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire on the borders of the two countries in 2003.
