SRINAGAR: Two government-owned hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir have lodged a criminal complaint against a Himachal Pradesh-based drug company alleging that it has supplied them spurious drugs.
A government spokesman said lab tests had shown that an antibiotic drug, Maximizane 625 contained no Amoxicillin while the company claimed that it contained 500 milligrams of it.
He said Minister for Medical Education, Taj Mohi-ud-Din “has taken a stern view of the matter and has issued strict instructions for investigations into the case.”
“In this regard, the Principal Government Medical College, Jammu and Medical Superintendent, Lal Ded Hospital, Srinagar have lodged First Information Report (FIR) against the responsible drug company,” the spokesman said.
“Principal Government College, Srinagar would lodge the FIR against the company after getting a formal copy of the report.”
The Deputy Drug Controller Kashmir, Nazir Ahmed told a local news agency that the antibiotic tablets had been manufactured by the Himachal based Company and marketed by a Bombay Based company.
However, he said, the Medical department received the consignment from ‘Life Line Pharma Co.’ after the drug was passed for use in hospitals by the department’s Purchasing committee of Jammu Province.
Minister Mohiuddin has asked the concerned officers to stop supply of the drug to the hospitals.
Samples of various drugs from all government hospitals and health centers will be taken and examined. “Within three days the report will be submitted,” he said.
