Dogs who helped catch Kashmir militants rewarded

NEW DELHI, Jan 30 (1996): The Indian army has bestowed honours on its dog squad for sniffing out bombs and helping to catch separatist militants in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Press Trust of India said on Tuesday.

It said Indian army chief General Shankar Roychowdhury announced the awards for the Remount and Veterinary Corp at a recent Army Day celebration.

“The dogs not only helped the troops to capture militants, but also sniffed hidden bombs and improvised explosive devices,” the news agency quoted a defence ministry spokesman as saying.

Indian troops are battling a separatist war in Kashmir in which more than 20,000 people have been killed.
