Bangladeshi Muslims protest over Kashmir killings

DHAKA, Jan 31, (1990): About 500 Moslems demonstrated near the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Wednesday, demanding an end to what they called genocide in Indian-ruled Kashmir.

“Stop Moslem genocide and atrocities in Kashmir”, the crowd chanted as riot police halted their march about 600 metres (yards) from the Indian mission.

Abdul Matin, chief of the Bangladesh Muslim League which organised the march, told the protesters New Delhi must take responsibility for events in Kashmir, India’s only Moslem-majority state.

It was the first demonstration in Bangladesh, the world’s third largest Moslem country, against recent violence in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state where more than 60 people have been killed in a campaign for independence.
