SRINAGAR: The army has denied involvement in the death of a young man in north Kashmir on Tuesday.
They say it could be the handiwork of militants “who are out to malign the Army”.
Tahir Ahmed Sofi died due to bullet injuries in the head and chest in Baramulla town.
A defence spokesman says that a foot patrol of the Army was attacked by a “violent mob of approximately 250 people”. He says the attackers surrounded the patrol party and refused to disperse despite warnings.
The spokesman says “A person out of the mob assaulted the Army personnel with an iron rod creating a life threatening situation.” He says the troops fired into the air “which could not have resulted in injury.”
The spokesman says Tahir Sofi died at a place far away from the location where the patrol was attacked.
“The death of Tahir Ahmed could not have been occurred due to firing by the Army personnel.”
The spokesman has hinted that militants could be behind the killing adding that the army would “get to the bottom of the truth.”
He said the General Officer Commanding (incharge) Northern Command, Lt Gen KT Parnaik has ordered a time bound inquiry into the incident.
