SRINAGAR: Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative assembly on Friday directed the government to check the fitness of school buses and the licenses of their drivers, a day after nine children died when a school bus skidded off the road and fell into a gorge.
The accident took place in south Kashmir’s Kokernag area.
Speaker Mubarak Gul has also directed constitution of two committees to look into the issue.
“Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir & Jammu ranges, Directors of School Education, Kashmir and Jammu and RTOs of these two regions will comprise the committees. They have been asked to give their report within a fortnight,” an official spokesman said.
The directions were given in response to a resolution moved by M. Y. Tarigami, state secretary of CPI (M) over the incident.
“The House also expressed grief over the loss of precious lives and conveyed its sympathies to the bereaved families,” the spokesman said.
The legislators prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and courage to the next of kin of the deceased families to bear the irreparable loss.
They observed silence for two minutes to pay their respects and also passed the resolution.
The Speaker said that earlier a House Committee headed by Tarigami was constituted to look into the road mishaps and that it had already submitted its report.
He assured that the government will be asked to submit action taken report in this regard.
