Family of Kashmiri Student Challenges UP Police Suicide Claims

There are missing links in police claims: Uncle, We are in touch with UP police and will ensure proper investigation: IGP

SRINAGAR: The family of Abdul Manan Wani, an engineering student from Kashmir found dead in Ghaziabad UP a few days ago, have contradicted the police claims that he committed suicide.

Talking to a local news agency, KNS, Prof Sharif Wani, uncle of the deceased said there were “some missing links” in police claims.

“His body was not hanging from the ceiling fan but tied to exhaust vent opening above the door (roshan daan) with a bed sheet and not by a rope, as was claimed by the police and reported by a section of media,” he said.

“The door of his room was not locked, it was wide open. All this leads to think that this mysterious death was a cold blooded murder.”

Manan was pursuing Engineering course at SRM College Ghaziabad and was living in a private hostel.

Prof Wani said that Mannan had left his home town Srinagar on the August 10 to continue with his degree classes in Ghaziabad and was found dead on September 4.

“That means he had returned from Kashmir 25 days ago and not three days ago as claimed by the police and reported in media. He was found dead by the landlord of the building he lived in, and not by college authorities,” he said.

“The landlord’s son informed us about his death on September 4 at 10:35 pm. Thus, it is beyond fact that some Navneet came to the deceased room at 1 am and found him hanging. After the call, we spoke to the police investigating officer, Uday Singh present at the site on the landlord’s son’s cell phone and he confirmed that Mannan is dead.”

Prof Wani told KNS that when the family members went there (Ghaziabad) they were not shown the body. “Neither before post mortem nor after that.”

“Police didn’t show us FSL reports and termed it a suicide which is incorrect and pathetic.,” Wani claimed.

The Inspector General Police (IGP) Kashmir Abdul Gani Mir said he is in
touch with UP police and are ensuring they do the proper investigation. “Prima-facie they (UP police) have told us it is a suicide but further investigations are going on,” he said.

Meanwhile, the dead body of Manan, which reached here around 11.45 am, was laid to rest at his ancestral grave yard Buchwara, Dalgate. Thousands of people took part in his funeral.
