SRINAGAR: Life has been hit in Shopian town and adjoining areas in south Kashmir due to a shutdown to commemorate on the fourth death anniversary of two young women.
Shops and business establishments are closed and traffic is off the roads.
Neelofar and Asiya died under mysterious circumstances on May 29-30 in 2009.
The town shut down in protest for 48 days that year as locals, family members and separatists alleged that the two women were killed after being raped by security forces.
The CBI or Central Bureau of Investigation have concluded that the two victims died due to drowning in Ranbinar nallah, something that the family rejects.
The strike has been called by the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Yesterday a seminar was organised in the town where speakers – civil society members, separatist leaders – alleged that government shielded the culprits involved in the crime and hushed up the case.
