5.8 Tremor Jolts Kashmir

SRINAGAR: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked Kashmir Valley Thursday noon.

“A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred here at 12.02 p.m,” Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office told the IANS.

“Its epicentre was in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan.” The depth of the quake, he said, was measured at 233.7 km.

No damage to life or property was reported.

Seismologists have expressed fears about a possible earthquake, such intense that it may kill tens of thousands of people, in Kashmir region in the future.

On Oct 8, 2005 a devastating quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale killed more than 40,000 people on the two sides of the Line of Control that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
