SRINAGAR: Fellow students of Mudasir Kamran, a Kashmir student who was found dead at his hostel in Hyderabad early this month, have commenced their 24-hour commemoration programme for him.
Mudasir was pursuing a doctorate at English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) and was found dead on March 2. There are conflicting versions of how he died.
Kashmiris protested over his death and believe he was “murdered by Hindu fanatics” for taking part in protests against the hanging of Afzal Guru.
The police in Hyderabad and Kashmir however maintain that it was a clear case of suicide after Mudasir was humiliated by the University proctor.
They say the young man had also been detained for a couple of hours after his “close friend had complained to the proctor over indiscipline”. EFLU students also have been alleging university’s mishandling of the issue as the reason behind the suicide, and demanding compensation to Mudasir’s family and suspension of Proctor Harish Vijra.
As part of their commemoration progarmme that began late on Friday, a series of documentary films will be screened on student suicides on university campuses, student movements in 1960s, and the freedom movement in Kashmir.
The films scheduled for screening include ‘Jashn-e-Azadi’ (celebrations of freedom) – a film which portrays the Kashmir conflict, ‘V for Vendetta’ ‘Death of Merit’ and ‘Chicano!: Taking Back the Schools’.
The open-air film screenings would be accompanied by renditions of poetry and revolutionary music, a press release from the ‘Struggle Committee for Justice for Mudasir Kamran stated’.
Students also painted an open canvas with the theme ‘When Resistance Isn’t a Choice’.
Mudasir’s fellow students will also enact a play ‘Khel’ in front of the hostel where he was found dead.
Besides, a public meeting in the campus will be held, which will be attended by many inlcuding a Kashmiri professor, S.A.R.Geelani.
