SRINAGAR: Sixteen people and 19 shopkeepers were fined for violating Anti-Tobacco Act in and around hospitals in this summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said here today on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Engineer Farooq Ahmad Shah, Anti-Tobacco squad of Drugs and Food Control Organization with the volunteers of JK Voluntary Health Association (JKVHA), Red Cross Society and Civil Defence inspected various areas around the health institutions of SMHS, Lalded, Bone and Joint and CD Hospitals.
They said 19 shopkeepers were found selling tobacco products within the 100 yards of health institutions which is a punishable offence.
A fine of Rs 1,900 has been realised from them, they said. Anti-Smoking Squad also conducted inspection of Old Secretariat, Lalded Hospital, G B Panth Hospital, Forest Complex Lal Chowk.
During the inspections 16 people were found smoking at these places, they said adding a fine of Rs 1,750 was realised from the offenders.
