Western Disturbance Approaching Kashmir, Cold Wave Tightens Grip

SRINAGAR: A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching the region, including Kashmir valley and Ladakh, where the cold wave has further tightened its grip with Srinagar, Leh and Kargil recording coldest night of the season so far.

There could be snowfall and rain on November 6 when the WD, originating in Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region, a Met department spokesman said.

He said upper reaches in the valley will receive fresh snowfall while plains will experience rains.

There was further drop in the temperature in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region due to dry weather and open sky. Leh recorded minus 8 degree minimum temperature, a notch below yesterday, he said, adding that it was coldest night of the season so far.

Border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway also witnessed a drop of four degrees as the minimum temperature settled at minus 6 degrees.

A number of water bodies have frozen and authorities have stopped supplying drinking water through pipes in the Ladakh region.

However, people are being provided water through tankers while others are using spring water, which remained warm during winter and cold in summer. The summer capital, Srinagar, also recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature dipped to 1.2 degree, two notches below normal.

Owing to cloudy sky, people resorted to woollen besides ‘Kangri’ and other electronic and gas gadgets to keep themselves warm. However, Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, remained coldest in the valley after minimum temperature remained minus 3 degree against the normal of 0 degree during this time of the season.

Gulmarg, famed ski resort in north Kashmir, which remained major attraction of tourists, skiers and other adventure lovers during winter because of world class snow slopes, however, witnessed some improvement in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 2.2, it was minus 1.2 degree there.

Kupwara, a frontier district, also witnessed coldest night of the season as the minimum dropped to minus 0.5 degree, about four notches below normal. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir and Kokernag in south Kashmir also witnessed below normal temperature.
