SRINAGAR, June 27: Authorities in Kashmir have decided that restrictions on the movement of people in downtown area of Srinagar city will continue for the third consecutive day today (Thursday).
A large deployment of police and paramilitaries has been restricting movement of people in old Srinagar for two days to pre-empt violent protests over the destruction of the shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Geelani in a fire on Monday.
Sources in the police department said that prohibitory orders under section 144 will remain in force in six police station areas of the city viz Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Kralkhud “till further orders”.
Section 144 prohibits assembly of more than four people. However it has become a euphemism for undeclared curfew in Jammu and Kashmir state.
