Kashmir cylinder explosion toll rises to three

SRINAGAR, July 28: Three people died Saturday and five others were wounded after an explosion took place in a tourist bus in Anantnag district of South Kashmir.

A police statement said the deaths were caused after a gas cylinder exploded in vehicle packed with tourists near Zurpora area on the Srinagar-Jammu National highway.

Neesha Jeetwah wife of Anil Jeetwah, Nirmala Rathore wife of Jivraj and Indu Bhae died in the incident, police said.

“Bharti wife of Ashwini Kumar, Neeta Jeetwah wife of Bharat Jeetwah, Preetama Jeetwah wife of Vinod Jeetwah, Jayshri Desai wife of Arun Kumar and Jaswanti Thakur wife of Vasant Thakur were injured in this incident,” a police spokesperson said.

Initial reports had suggested that the vehicle came under a grenade attack.

The tourists killed were from Mumbai state.

Kashmir is witnessing a booming tourist season with visitors from across the country and abroad flocking to the scenic Himalayan state like never before. Tourism is picking up after more than two decades of violence involving security forces and militants which killed tens of thousands in this scenic Himalayan region.

The police said they are still ascertaining how the cylinder exploded.
