Landslides, flash flood kill six in J&K

SRINAGAR, Aug 1: At least six persons have died due to landslides and flash floods in various places in Jammu, the winter capital of the state, officials say.

Police said a pilgrim, Shishant Anand, enroute to the Vaishnodevi cave temple was killed in a landslide in Adhkuwari area in Trikuta hills on Tuesday night.

In Reasi district Shamas Din, 28, and Abdul Qayoom, 22, had gone to collect wood from the forest in Chaterbali-Dewal when they were buried under earth after a landslide.

In another such incident, 32-year-old Bashir Ahmed was killed in a landslide in Reasi this morning. He was on way to Dharmari area with his wife Muneera and 10-year-old son, Masoom when the landslide occurred.

“Muneera escaped unhurt. Masoom, who suffered injuries in the incident, was hospitalized,” officials said.

Two minor girls have been also been killed in flash floods in Jammu’s Udhampur district. The girls, aged 5 and 7 years, were playing close to a river at Pradonu village when the were washed away by a flash flood, officials said.

At least eight people have died in landslides and flash floods in the state in the past six days. On July 26, an officer of Border Security Force and his constable were washed away by a flash flood during a patrol in the state’s Rajouri distrcit. Their bodies were found more than three days after.
