Trooper ‘shoots self’ in north Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A soldier of the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) has died after he allegedly shot himself in north Kashmir.

Tula Shankar, 34, was in his camp at Boniyar in Baramulla district when he reportedly committed suicide by firing at himself with his service gun.

He died on the spot.

Why Shankar may have taken his life is not immediately known, but police have registered a case and begun formal investigations.

Authorities in security forces have introduced Yoga and other measures to combat internal stress among soldiers posted in the region, where tens of thousands have died in more than two decades of conflict.
