SRINAGAR, Sept 7: Tripura U-17 football team has won the 58th Junior National School Games-2012 championship which was played at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.
An official spokesperson said the winning team converted the penalty corners into goals and won the final of the championship defeating Chandigarh U-17 Foot Ball team. The host team had already crashed out after losing two matches consecutively.
The 5-day long event was organised by the department of youth services and sports under the aegis of School Games Federation of India in which over 600 players and managers from 27 states across the country participated.
54 players selected from the participating teams which will represent the country at the international event in France, he said.
With violence waning in Kashmir, where an armed rebellion killed tens of thousands and caused a systemic collapse, sports and economic activities are picking up.
Earlier this year, the state football team played two matches against one of India’s premier teams, Mohammadan Sporting Club, in the valley.
Speaking on the Friday’s occasion, Speaker of the state legislative assembly, Mohammed Akbar Lone said such national events strengthen the bond of friendship among players.
“The players are the model of national integration, friendship and amity, he added”.
Sports minister R.S. Chib said that the government under the leadership of Chief Minister is “keen to develop sports infrastructure for improving sports talent” among the youth of the State.
Chairperson, the Innercall, Mrs. Roma Wani also announced special prizes for the two players who scored highest number of goals during the event.
