TRAL: Residents of Tral town in South Kashmir took to the streets on Thursday to protest against erratic power supply, amid a shutdown called by traders.
The protestors in large number raised slogans against the Power Development Department (PDD).
The protesters also blocked vital road links for several hours bringing the traffic to a halt. Officials of the district administration tried in vain to disperse them.
The protestors alleged that for the past few days there is no electricity in the town. “We held protest demonstrations few days back too but the authorities assured us that the power supply will be restored soon and we called off the protests,” the residents said.
“However the power supply has worsened and few of the villages are completely reeling under darkness.”
The Traders Federation and Youth Welfare Forum of Tral had called for a complete shutdown against the non-availability of electricity in the town.
Roads wore a deserted look while schools and business establishments remained shut.
One of the members of Traders Federation warned of an indefinite strike if PDD failed to improve the situation.
PDD officials have now assured that 18-hours electricity would be made available to them while the duration for curtailment would be only 6 hours.
