SRINAGAR, Nov 14: At least three soldiers have been killed after a group of armed militants who were trying to sneak into this side of Kashmir from the Pakistan-administered part fired at them, an army spokesperson says.
Lt. Col J.S. Brar, the Defence spokesperson based in capital Srinagar, said two militants were also killed in the infiltration bid, the second such incident on the Line of Control since Friday last.
He said the militants tried to infiltrate through the Nowgam sector of Baramulla district and were intercepted by army soldiers.
“In the encounter three soldiers lost their lives.”
Brar said the search operation is still on.
The army recently said it has stepped up vigil along the LoC to thwart any infiltration from the Pakistani side of Kashmir. There has always been an escalation in militant incursion before winter snow blocks the high Himalayan passes.
On November 9, the army said it killed four infiltrators in Keran sector in northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Kashmir, which has seen more than two decades of violence involving militants and security forces, is now seeing relatively peaceful days. Incidents of militancy related violence are coming down in number.
India has been building pressure on Pakistan to stop sending militants into this region from across the LoC, which divides it into two parts.
But Pakistan has consistently denied all such allegations.
