SRINAGAR, MAY 8: Thousands of Hindus from across the country have registered for their annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Kashmir through banks and the internet so far.
Monday was the first day of e-registration for the pilgrimage which begins on 25th June this year.
“16,553 persons utilized internet based e-Registration facility and 174 Bank Branches for registering the dates and routes on which they wish to perform this year’s Yatra to the Holy Cave,” an official hand-out of the government said.
The Amarnath cave shrine in the Himalayan mountain range houses an ice stalagmite revered by the followers of Hindu God, Shiva.
Besides the internet facility and the banks, more than a hundred post-offices across India will also help people to register for the pilgrimage.
More than half-a-million Hindu pilgrims visit Kashmir every year to trek to the shrine situated at an altitude of more than 12,000 feet.
