SRINAGAR: Life was affected yet again in the Kashmir valley, where breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) has called a general strike today in protest against the death of a school bus driver after security forces opened fire on demonstrators at Gagran, where four youths were killed in CRPF firing on September 7.
Police said three of the four youths were having no previous militant links while the fourth was a non-local militant of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT).
But the locals said he was a labourer from Bihar.
A school bus driver was killed and several others were injured when security forces on Wednesday opened fire to disperse demonstrators at Gagran, who were demanding removal of the CRPF camp in the area.
Separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani called for a shutdown in the Kashmir valley and the Chenab valley districts of Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban Thursday over the killing of the man in Shopian.
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik also called for a sit-in at the city centre Lal Chowk in Srinagar Friday.
Communist Party of India (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has demanded time-bound judicial probe into killing of four youths while Congress, a partner in the coalition government, has urged the state government to come out with facts about the incident.
Main opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti was prevented from visiting Shopian yesterday and was sent back to Srinagar from Pulwama by authorities. Mehbooba on Wednesday appealed to New Delhi to remove Central Reserve Police (CRPF) camp at Gargan responsible for five innocent killings.
