SRINAGAR, May 6: An eight-year-old boy was killed on Sunday when he played with a grenade abandoned during a gun battle between rebels and troops in Kashmir, police said.
They said Tariq Ahmad Shah found a grenade in a playing field in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.
“It exploded once he started fiddling with it,” a police official said.
Shah is the second boy to have died due to stray explosive material in Kashmir in three weeks.
Last month, Ikhlaq Ahmed of Hajinar, Karnah was killed by a stray bomb while working in his field.
Such deaths are common in Kashmir, mostly in the border areas.
With peace in valley militancy related violence has declined drastically, but stray explosives left behind after gunfights which took place years ago continue taking lives.
Six people were killed and many others were injured in such incidents across the valley last year.
