Sporadic Clashes in Kashmir, CRPF on the Rampage

SRINAGAR: Sporadic clashes between protesters and the police and paramilitaries continue across Kashmir valley, two days after security forces shot dead a young man in north Kashmir, witnesses say.

Residents in many areas have accused the paramilitary CRPF of braging into houses, damaging property and beating up people.

Sixteen people, including policemen, have been injured so far.

In Baramulla, where Tahir Ahmed Sofi died due to bullet injuries in the head, a huge protest demonstration started from Azad Gunz and culminated peacefully near his residence.

However, clashes erupted near Dewan Park bridge as youth pelted the police with stones. Our correspondent says he saw at least three youth who were wounded by pellets fired by the police.

Minor clashes were also reported from Cement Bridge area in the town.

SRINAGAR

In Srinagar clashes were reported from Batmaloo area where residents accused the police and paramilitaries of damaging property. They say the CRPF personnel smashed window panes of many residential houses and also a mosque.

Residents of Habak area told us over phone that the CRPF personnel barged into residential houses, smashed windows, damaged cars and beat up people including women.

“Fear has spread across the area,” said Ehtisham Banday. He said there were clashes in the area today after the CRPF had damaged property late on Wednesday also.

SOUTH KASHMIR

In southern valley, violent clashes continued since morning in Khudwan area in Kulgam. Our correspondent there says reinforcements of the police were rushed in to enforce restrictions more stringently.

He says the CRPF personnel damaged property and also smashed window panes of a local Mosque at Kadipora in Islamabad after clashes with the youth there.

Police lobbed tearsmoke shells to disperse protesters who pelted them with rocks also at Sangam, where violent clashes broke out in the afternoon. Minor clashes occurred in Bijbehara too.

Elsewhere, protesters clashed with the police at Narbal crossing in Budgam, Papchan in Bandipora, Cherkoot, Lolab in Kupwara, a police spokesman said.

He said at least nine policemen have been injured so far.
