Police has sought details from the railway authorities on the special train, and why it was started.
SRINAGAR: Two people have been crushed to death by a speeding train in south Kashmir, police say.
Police say the train was “unscheduled”.
Ghulam Mohi-u-Din Mir, 55, of Sherpora village and Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, 60, of Munghall village in Anantnag district were crossing a railway bridge in the area when they came under a fast moving train at Fooda village.
The train was travelling from Budgam in central Kashmir to Qazigund in the south.
When asked why there were no security guards to warn residents not to move over the railway bridge, Superintendent of Police, Railways, Bashir Ahmed told FreePress:
“We have guards at a distance of each half a kilometre. They had even warned them no to move over it.”
But he said there was confusion because the train that killed the two was not a regular one, but a ‘special’ run.
“They crossed the bridge thinking that the scheduled train had already crossed the bridge. They did not know that another train was incoming.”
Mr Ahmed said the police has sought details from the railway authorities on the special train, and why it was started.
“We will let you know the details,” he said.
