SRINAGAR: Life was on Monday crippled in southern Kashmir’s Shopian town due to spontaneous strike against the arrest of a youth.
Business and other activities remained shut and traffic was off the road in the town and adjoining areas though there was no strike call from any organisation.
Work in government offices, banks and educational institutions was also affected due to the strike.
People were protesting against the arrest of a youth Zubair Ahmad during the intervening night of March 29 and 30 from his Bonabazar house in the town.
Police alleged that he would organise stone pelting in the town.
They said Zubair was arrested several times in the past and released after warning. However, he continued to indulge in stone pelting and inciting others also.
Yesterday, several people, including security personnel were injured in clashes in the town.
