SRINAGAR: The police in Kashmir has decided to seek help from Bihar police to ascertain the identify a youth, shot dead by paramilitary CRPF, in Shopian district of south Kashmir nine days ago.
The youth, one among four youth killed that day, has still not been identified. The other three were locals and according to the police had no links to militancy.
“There are so many versions of the story. Some say he was a mason or labourer from Bihar, while others suggest he was a militant,” said police chief, Ashok Prasad, to a local news agency, KNS. “We are looking at every possible angle to ascertain the facts.”
The DGP added that a strong militancy angle could not be ruled out.
“We had summoned all the non local labourers to identify the person but none of them did so. This has strengthened the claim that he was a militant, but still we want to make sure that his identify is fully established,” he said.
“We are writing to Bihar Police to help us in the identification process.”
The police have also sent a mobile phone and a SIM card, which they claimed to have recovered from the non-local youth” for forensic tests to Chandigarh. The report is yet to come.
