SRINAGAR: With separatist already having rejected the inquiry orders into Shopian firing incidents, locals too don’t seem to be much enthusiastic about it as no one turned out for the deposition on Monday, the first day.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian had appealed to people to come with any information regarding the firing incidents that led five people dead.
He had issued a public notice asking eyewitnesses to depose before the commission from 16th to 21st September for the recording of the statements.
However sources told KNS that no one turned up for the same till late afternoon.
A local daily reports that no one will ever do so. It quotes a group of locals saying they feared reprisal from the authorities itself.
“The fate of the probe into the Shopian double rape and murder is still fresh in our minds… Instead of the accused, it is the witnesses and lawyers who were indicted by the state agencies probing the matter,” writes the newspaper, quoting the residents.
“Now why should we risk our lives and become part of the probe whose fate we already know.”
