SRINAGAR: Authorities in Kashmir have sounded a high alert across the Valley in view of the Independence Day.
Tight security arrangements have been made in and around Bakshi stadium here where the main function will be held on Thursday, and also other areas.
The Inspector General Police (IGP), Kashmir, Abdul Gani Mir told a local news agency, KNS that the police is taking all measures to ensure that Independence Day celebrations pass off peacefully.
“Security forces have been alerted to prevent any untoward incident,” he said.
Another senior police officer said “sharp shooters have been deployed on high rise buildings in different areas around the stadium.”
“The movement of people is being closely monitored,” he said.
In Srinagar, policemen and CRPF personnel were seen stopping and searching vehicles in different localities. Police was also checking entry of vehicles from other districts at Parimpora, Bemina, Qamrwari and other places.
Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Maisuma, Dalgate and other area of Srinagar to thwart any untoward incident.
Armored vehicles of police and paramilitary forces were seen at many road junctions.
Security has also been beefed up in north Kashmir areas of Sopore, Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora and Handwara. Army also carried out checking of vehicles in different areas.
