SRINAGAR, Aug 8: Police have arrested two persons, including a Sarpanch (village head), in connection with the death of a youth during clashes inside a mosque in Ganderbal district, at least 25 kilometres from capital Srinagar.
Sarpanch Mohammad Subhan Wani and Ali Mohammad Shiekh were arrested after Shabir Ahmad Bhat died after clashes broke out in a mosque over the use of loudspeakers at Sandbal on Tuesday, they said.
“We have so far arrested two persons involved while a hunt in on for the main accused who has been identified,” a police spokesperson said.
Religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami protested against the 20-year-old Bhat’s killing , their activist, and have accused the ruling National Conference affiliated Sarpanch and his associates of a “pre-planned murder”.
“The National Conference workers attacked the worsippers when they were praying. They have a history of attacking Jamaat cadre,” Jamaat chief Sheikh Muhammad Hassan said yesterday.
“Citing the use of loudspeakers as the reason for the incident is only to divert the attention from the real issue that it was a pre-planned attack on Jammat cadres.”
