SRINAGAR: After five years of gap, the JK football team qualified for the pre-quarterfinal round of the ongoing 67th Santosh Trophy by defeating Assam in their second group match at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on Monday.
In its second match of the group, JK defeated Assam by 1-0 through 70th minute penalty scored by Rizwan. Earlier JK in its first match of the event had defeated Rajasthan in a one sided match by 3-1.
With two wins out of two matches played, JK cemented its place in the pre-quarterfinal round of the event.
It is after five years that JK qualified for the next stage of the event last qualified during 2008 event hosted by JK.
In total it is only fifth time ever in the 67 editions of the prestigious national level event that JK has qualified for next round. The team will now return back to Jammu on February 7 and will be heading for Kerala for Pre-Quarterfinal stage on 19th.
The next round of trophy is scheduled to be held at Kerala from February 21.
