Clashes at Hyderpora
SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir authorities have imposed selective restrictions in the summer capital Srinagar to foil senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s proposed march to the UN Military Observers office today (Wednesday).
Mr Geelani has urged people to converge outside his Hyderpora residence from where he intends to lead a procession towards the UN office to submit a memorandum over killings by Indian security forces.
Police have imposed restrictions in the area around the UNMOGIP office at Sonwar in Srinagar.
The octogenarian leader is under house arrest for several months now. Police have also restricted movement of traffic and public in Hyderpora, where Mr Geelani lives.
“Precautionary measures have been taken at some places in the city to maintain law and order. The situation is otherwise normal in the city and elsewhere,” a police official told IANS news agency.

‘Continuity in Struggle’
Mr Geelani, who heads the hardline faction of separatist alliance Hurriyat Conference, has called upon people to prepare for a pro-active resistance against Indian rule in the state.
He has indicated that he will issue a protest calendar in coming days. He has also called for a shutdown in the valley on Saturday, September 21.
Mr Geelani has said it is not enough for the “freedom-loving” to hold protest demonstrations after the Indian security forces have committed an atrocity.
“Instead there needs to be a continuity in our struggle in order to shake the conscience of the international community,” he said.
He has said that the “long silence” adopted by the people of Kashmir after the 2010 unrest has encouraged the security forces to plan “systematic killings of our youths.”
“It is evident by the incidents in Markundal, Gool and now Shopian,” he added.
