SRINAGAR: There was some respite from cold in the Kashmir valley on Friday with the sun playing peek a boo.
But the weather office has predicted rain or snow for today.
However, the Met department spokesperson added there would be dry weather during subsequent two days in the Valley.
He said the maximum temperature will remain near normal while the night temperature will drop slightly.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, remained the coldest in the Valley. The minimum temperaure was minus 9.3 degree celsius, more than three degrees below normal.
Minimum temperature at Pahalgam, was recorded at minus 7.8 degree against yesterday’s minus 2.4 degrees.
Similarly, the summer capital, Srinagar, also witnessed a drop in the minimum temperature by a degree. It was 0.6 degree against yesterday’s 1.9 degree, the Met spokesman said.
At Leh in Ladakh region, there was about six degree drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterday’s minus 4.8 degrees, it was minus 10.2 degrees, the Met spokesman said, adding that temperature of Kargil, a border town, was not available.
Due to fresh snowfall, there was a danger of avalanche in the upper reaches in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region till tonight.
According to divisional commissioner, Kashmir, medium danger avalanche warning exists in snowbound areas of Bandipora, Gurez sector, Keran sector, Naugaon Kayian sector, Chowkibal-Tangdhar sector, Machil sector, Sonamarg, Drass ad Kargil sector till tonight.
In view of this, people in snowbound areas are advised to avoid movement during snowfall and not to venture into steep avalanche prone slopes during the said period.
People are also advised to regularly clear the snow from rooftops of their houses to avoid any casualty due to house collapse.
During the period, general public is requested to take precautionary measures as advised and in the event of any eventuality.
