SRINAGAR: Army Commander, Northern Command, Lt General Sanjiv Chachra rushed here as desperate attempts are being made from across the Line of Control (LoC) to send more infiltrators to help about 30 to 40 militants, holed up in the woods in Keran sector for the past 13 days, to escape.
Since October 2, there were three three major infiltration attempts from Pakistani Kashmir in Keran sector which were foiled by alert troops, killing seven heavily armed militants.
Lt General Chachra arrived here yesterday to take stock of the situation, which arised due to the recent incidents of infiltration attempts by militants along the LOC in the Valley, a day after the infiltration issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly.
The legislators said another Kargil should not be allowed in Keran and demanded that the government make a statement in the House.
Immediately after arriving here, he along with Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, Chinar Corps Commander visited the Headquarters of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) where he was briefed by the Commanders on the prevailing security scenario in their areas of responsibility.
He later carried out the aerial recce of forward posts, including the area where 30 to 40 militants are holed up for the past 13 days, defence sources said.
However, the Army commander expressed satisfaction over the preparedness of security forces in ensuring safety and security in the Valley and praised the high-level of synergy existing among the police, CRPF and Army.
