SRINAGAR: Students in two remote, high altitude areas of the state may now pursue higher education in their own hometowns.

Authorities say two government degree colleges sanctioned for Nobra and Zanskar areas of the mounatinous Ladakh region will be functional from this academic session.

Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone told the Assembly “26 Gazetted and 14 non-gazetted posts stand sanctioned for both the colleges”, according to an official statement.

The Nobra is a tri-armed valley, 150 km from Leh, one of the main towns of Ladakh. It is situated at an altitude of about 10,000 ft (3048 metres) above the sea level.

The mountainous, remote Zanskar area of Kargil district is situated at an altitude ranging from 3500m to 7000m above sea level.
