SRINAGAR, Oct 30: A lovesick techie impersonating as Army captain has sent entire security establishment into a tizzy after reports surfaced that he has been repeatedly breaching the high security military installations to meet his girlfriend in Jammu.
Umesh Kumar, a computer engineer from Rajasthan, was picked up by the police in a routine raid from a local hotel in Jammu. He later turned out to be a major catch for the police as they recovered forged documents of sensitive nature, including Army identity cards, smart canteen cards, medical records and other papers from his possession.
During questioning, he reportedly told the police that he had forged the documents to gain access to his girlfriend who is working in one of the army hospitals in Jammu.
“He has been going around calling himself an army officer. In the process he cheated a woman whom he promised to marry. We have registered a case of cheating against him,” said JP Singh, deputy inspector general of police, Jammu-Kathua range.
What has, however, baffled the police is that he has been visiting number of Army installations, including Yol cantonment in Himachal Pradesh and Nagrota garrison of 16 crops army headquarters.
“He had cleverly drafted the documents so that no Army man could detect the fraud. We are trying to go to the bottom of the case to unravel the mystery,” said a police officer.
During investigation, he has revealed that since his girlfriend had got suspicious about him, he showed her forged court-martial documents to regain her trust. “He tried to project that he was once court-martialed but later acquitted,” said a police officer.
Police are also looking for his accomplices who might have helped him in gaining access to the sensitive army installations. “He has told us about a man who was providing him SIM cards on fake addresses,” said an officer.
Army has, so far, declined to comment on this issue, saying the police is investigating the matter .“Anybody can forge any documents by downloading from the internet. Anyone can claim anything. We feel he is lying,” said an Army officer requesting anonymity.
