SRINAGAR, Oct 8: Protests continued for the third consecutive day Monday in southern Kashmir after a woman was allegedly beaten to death by police during a search for contraband drugs on Saturday.
Protesters again took to roads in Ahlaan Gadool village in Kokernag area demanding punishment for policemen and son-in-law responsible for the death of 65-year-old Mukhti.
Police say they have arrested the woman’s son-in-law, Abdul Majid Deka, and two special police officers (SPOs) – Mohammad Ashraf Deka and Fayaz Ahmad in connection with the case.
The police have also retracted from its earlier statement that the search was conducted on a tip-off that there were stocks in the house of contraband herb called dioscorea, which is used in making drugs.
“During investigation, we found that the three arrested had misguided the police by placing 3.3 kg of dioscorea near her house,” a police spokesperson said.
A departmental probe has also been ordered against the assistant sub-inspector who headed the search team.
Meanwhile police say they are waiting for the post-mortem report to establish the cause of the woman’s death.
