SRINAGAR: People’s Democratic Party(PDP) today took out a rally here, protesting against the killings of five people allegedly by security forces on September 7 and 11 at Gagran, Shopian areas in south Kashmir.
Led by party president Mehbooba Mufti, PDP leaders and other workers took out a procession from party headquarters, raising slogans against the National Conference (NC)-led coalition government in the state.
After marching through different streets, the PDP procession was stopped by police personnel at Regal Chowk here.
The processionists were demanding that they should be allowed to march to civil secretariat, seat of the government, to lodge their protest against the Shopian killings.
Ms Mufti alleged that the PDP leaders, including herself, were not allowed to visit Shopian to express solidarity with the breaved families.
“I was detained and sent back from Pulwama by police,” she said adding other leaders, who represented the people in the assembly, too were not allowed to meet residents, who are facing acute shortage of essentials because of indefinite curfew restrictions.
The processionists were also raising slogans, demanding resolution of the Kashmir issue. Ms Mufti also criticised the government for detaining youths under Public Safety Act (PSA) on filmy grounds.
She said a large number of leaders were being arrested again and again under the PSA despite court directions to release them. Demanding stern action against the security forces involved in these killings, she said inquires ordered by the government in previous cases proved hoax as nothing has come out.
She said the government was not even allowing people to express their anger against innocent killings peacefully. Later, the processionists dispersed peacefully.
