Probe Encroachment on SKIMS land in Kashmir: Omar

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar and other revenue officials to investigate about the allegations that more than 400 kanals of S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has been encroached upon.

Official sources said Mr Abdullah has taken strong notice to reports that more than 400 kanals of land, adjacent to premier hospital of the state, has been illegally occupied by people.

The land mafia has constructed roads, sources said, adding that some people have already started construction while other are growing vegetables and other crops.

Director of the SKIMS said that then government , when the institute of constructed, has planned to construct post operation huts, where the patients could recover. There was also proposal to put houseboats in nearby ‘Anchar Lake’ water body to promote medical tourism, he said adding that due to turmoil in 90s the proposal suffered a set back with the result some people illegally occupied the land belonging to SKIMS.

The front of the SKIMS was also construct facing the lake so that patients could get a good environment, he said.

Taking strong note of the encroachment on SKIMS land, Chief Minister said he has directed Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and revenue officials to visit the area and check the revenue records of the land.

Once the report is received, we will take action, Mr Abdullah said.
